The
Research Committee 21 (RC21)
of the International Sociology Association, the International
Journal of Urban and Regional Research (IJURR)
and the Foundation
for Urban and Regional Studies (FURS),
in collaboration with the Centre
for Metropolitan Studies (CEM)
in São Paulo jointly organize the first inaugural 5-day School on
“Comparative Urban Studies”.
OBJECTIVES
The objective of this inaugural 5-day School is to promote a
comparative understanding of cities across the world, through
intensive interaction between junior and established researchers. A
maximum of 25 places are available for postgraduate students and
junior post-doctoral scholars. About 15 generous scholarships are
available for participants.
TOPICS
Topics to be studied in the School include the similarities and
differences between cities in the global North and South; Sao Paulo
itself (to include guided tours of the city); segregation,
inequality and poverty; and belonging, exclusion and the city. The
School will also include discussions of the publication of and
fund-raising for research.
SCHOLARS
Participating scholars include Jan Willem Duyvendak (University of
Amsterdam), Nadya Guimaraes (University of Sao Paulo and CEM), Yuri
Kazepov (University of Urbino), John Logan (Brown University),
Eduardo Marques (University of Sao Paulo and CEM), Enzo Mingione
(University of Milan-Bicocca), Edmond Preteceille (Sciences Po),
Raquel Rolnik (Catholic University of Campinas), Francisco Sabatini
(Catholic University of Chile) and Jeremy Seekings (IJURR and
University of Cape Town).
FEES
The fee for the course is 400 Euro (approx. 585 USD). This amount
covers the organizational costs and includes accommodation (6 nights
in double rooms), a welcome reception, the e-reader and the final
dinner. For those who do not need accommodation, the fee is 200 Euro
(approx 283 USD).
FELLOWSHIPS
About fifteen scholarships are available for participants from
countries classified in category “B” and “C” by ISA (see: http://www.isa-sociology.org/table_c.htm).
The scholarships will cover accommodation (in double room) at the
School venue, a welcome reception, the final dinner and a
substantial contribution to travel expenses (average 450 Euro), as
well as the registration fee and accommodation for the RC21
Conference on Inequality, Inclusion and the Sense of Belonging
taking place in São Paulo from 23-25 August 2009. Scholarship
holders will be required to participate in and present a paper at
the RC21 conference.
The language of the School will be English. Participants in the
School will also be encouraged to bring work they have done
previously for discussion with the senior scholars. Special
attention will be paid to Sao Paulo itself, and tours will be held.
